NHS Trust Values – The Roots That Should Anchor Us, But Often Falter In A Storm

๐•๐š๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ž๐ฌ are the core beliefs that define us, our essence. Collectively, they provide ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐œ๐จ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐š๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐ ๐ฎ๐ข๐๐ž๐ฌ ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐๐ž๐œ๐ข๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ and what we stand for; whatโ€™s important in our lives.

Large organisations such as ๐๐‡๐’ ๐“๐ซ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฌ spend time defining and publicising their corporate values. The intention is to serve as the guiding principles that drive their decisions and behaviours. For example, a snapshot of my local NHS Providers reveals the following sets of values:

The NHS is currently an incredibly ๐ญ๐จ๐ฎ๐ ๐ก working environment. Staff are facing ๐ฎ๐ง๐œ๐ž๐ซ๐ญ๐š๐ข๐ง ๐Ÿ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ซ๐ž๐๐ฎ๐ง๐๐š๐ง๐œ๐ฒ.

๐…๐ข๐ง๐š๐ง๐œ๐ข๐š๐ฅ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ๐ฆ๐š๐ง๐œ๐ž ๐ฉ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ ๐œ๐š๐ง ๐Ÿ๐ž๐ž๐ฅ ๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ฐ๐ก๐ž๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐  and it is hard to see any immediate cause for optimism.

And it is at times like these that organisational values matter most. ๐“๐ก๐ž๐ฒ ๐š๐ซ๐ž ๐ž๐š๐ฌ๐ฒ ๐ญ๐จ ๐ฅ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž ๐›๐ฒ ๐จ๐ง ๐š ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ง๐ง๐ฒ ๐๐š๐ฒ, ๐›๐ฎ๐ญ ๐ฆ๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ง๐ž๐ž๐๐ž๐ ๐ข๐ง ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ž๐ฒ๐ž ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐š ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ง๐š๐๐จ.

Great leaders live in service to organisational values during these tough times, role modelling kindness, respect, fairness and integrity.

This is no easy task, but outstanding, ๐œ๐จ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐š๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐š๐ญ๐ž ๐ฅ๐ž๐š๐๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ๐ก๐ข๐ฉ ๐ซ๐ž๐ช๐ฎ๐ข๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ก๐จ๐ฌ๐ž ๐ข๐ง ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฉ๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐ข๐›๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ to ๐š๐ฎ๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐œ๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ซ๐จ๐ฅ๐ž ๐ฆ๐จ๐๐ž๐ฅ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ฌ๐ž ๐ฏ๐š๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ž๐ฌ.

This doesnโ€™t mean avoiding difficult decisions. Kindness does not mean weakness, but it does require ๐ฅ๐ž๐š๐๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐ž๐ฆ๐ฉ๐š๐ญ๐ก๐ฒ.

All of us who work in NHS organisations should expect our leaders to role model their organisational values; ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ฌ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ฃ๐จ๐› ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ฅ๐ž๐š๐๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ๐ก๐ข๐ฉ.

๐€ ๐ฆ๐ข๐ฌ๐ฆ๐š๐ญ๐œ๐ก between an organisationโ€™s stated values and the lived experience of our working lives creates significant distress, it feels unjust, wrong. ๐–๐ž ๐Ÿ๐ž๐ž๐ฅ ๐ข๐ญ ๐ข๐ง ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐›๐จ๐ง๐ž๐ฌ.

And when our lived experience of work clashes with our personal values, this tension is a major contributor to ๐›๐ฎ๐ซ๐ง๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ. We become cynical as a protective mechanism; we disengage, we retreat. ๐–๐ž ๐š๐ซ๐ž ๐๐ข๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐ข๐ฌ๐ก๐ž๐. We risk being less able to deliver the compassionate care we aspire to.

The higher purpose of organisational values is to guide those in authority in everything they do. Not just in the good times, the sunny days, but in the ๐ญ๐จ๐ฎ๐ ๐ก ๐ญ๐ข๐ฆ๐ž๐ฌ, in the ๐ž๐ฒ๐ž ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฆ. ๐ˆ๐ง ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ก๐ž๐ซ๐ž ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ง๐จ๐ฐ. ๐–๐ž ๐ฌ๐ก๐จ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ ๐ž๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ž๐œ๐ญ ๐ง๐จ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ฅ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ.
