The Thriving Doctor

Where medicine finds meaning

Hi, I’m Paul

I work as a coaching senior doctor in Suffolk

With over 20 years of experience as a consultant neurologist and clinical leader, I offer a deep understanding of the neuroscience of wellbeing and burnout. This is supported by a decade of research into the institutional drivers of burnout and the implementation of prevention strategies.

Having personally recovered from burnout and navigated a career change, I specialise in helping doctors rediscover their passion for medicine, set boundaries, and thrive both professionally and personally.

Burnout is not a sign of weakness, but a call to realign with what truly matters.

Through coaching, mindfulness, and deep listening, I guide doctors from exhaustion to a meaningful, purpose-driven career.

Working as a doctor in the NHS has never been more difficult…

Burnout and Exhaustion

Over 50% of doctors report experiencing burnout, with numbers continuing to rise. Widespread exhaustion and cynicism are becoming the norm.

Stress-Related Absences

1 in 4 NHS doctors take time off each year due to stress, with mental health struggles, including anxiety and depression, at all-time highs.

Overwhelmed GPs

Almost half of GPs feel overwhelmed, according to the latest GMC survey, highlighting the pressure faced across primary care.

Chronic Stress Normalised

Stress and high pressure are so endemic in the NHS that they are now expected as part of the job.

Toxic Working Environment

A culture of “never show weakness” and relentless pressure to prioritise patients at all costs is fueling burnout and eroding well-being.

Erosion of Boundaries and Helplessness

The constant push to do more, with no clear solutions or support, is leaving many doctors feeling helpless and unsure where to turn for help.

Take the first step towards reclaiming your wellbeing and purpose

Let’s work together to build a career that aligns with your values, supports your mental health, and allows you to thrive both professionally and personally.

At the end of the day, people will forget what you said, they will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel

“As a hospital consultant I had started feeling a bit directionless and that I was no longer in charge of my own career. Paul’s gave me a safe space for reflection. The greater level of self-understanding I gained has helped with other situations and interactions since the coaching finished, both in and outside of work. It was very valuable to be coached by a fellow senior doctor and I would highly recommend Paul as a coach.”

“When I started working with Paul, I was in a place where I felt really stuck. Through his coaching which is grounded in neuroscience, I understood what made me tick and how I was making decisions that weren’t aligned to my values. Paul has a really positive presence and I’m very grateful for his work with me and for nudging me in the right direction.”

“Coaching with Paul came at just the right time in my life, where I talked through the prospect of a major career and life change. Now I’m living my best life in the new role and I am so grateful to Paul for the part he played in helping me get here. Thank you!”

“When I first started coaching with Paul, I had fallen quite far down the doctor burn out slope without really realising it. I felt completely stuck in my position and could not see a way out. Coaching has helped me explore my ideal career, given me some realistic perspective, change my working and life habits and ensure I set good boundaries. This has given me a work/life balance that means, I will thrive in years to come. Coaching with Paul is the best thing I’ve done for my career, wellbeing and personal growth in years.”
